I was bullied all the way through elementary school because I was bigger (than other kids), said Tatyianna, who is now 13. I was ready to drop out.

Tatyianna’s mother, Kenyetta Cheatum, stepped in. She created a company, Big Sistas W/Purpose, which she describes as a mentoring program that will provide support to young women with low self-esteem and bullying issues.

The program’s official launch will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Belk Activity Center at Bowers Park during a plus-size model fashion show, sponsored by Belk department store and Maurices, a women’s clothing retailer.

Cheatum said the goals of the program are to instill confidence in young women, provide role models for them and help them take a stand against bullying.

We’re not tolerating bullying in schools, Cheatum said. We need to fix this problem.

Cheatum said she hopes to extend her program to local schools. She said she would like to perform skits that show students the effects of bullying and help teachers recognize signs that someone is being bullied. The program will also offer social events for girls experiencing the same issues her daughter to learn more faced.
