Beauty Doesn’t Mean Sacrificing Cultural Heritage, Says Dr. J

Credit: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Picking the right dress for the Emmys is just half the battle. In order to win the red carpet game, celebrities have to also excel in the beauty arena. So, who had the best hair and makeup at the 2013 Emmys, held on Sept. 22 in L.A.? Here are Us Weekly Beauty Director Gwen Flamberg’s top beauty picks for the evening.

In fact, Dr. J has performed a fair amount of revision procedures following a rhinoplasty elsewhere which didn’t respect these specific aesthetic sensibilities. Similar issues were brought to national prominence most recently when Julie Chen announced on the Talk that she had had an Asian blepharoplasty (eye lid surgery) early in her career in response to pressure from her former bosses. While Dr. J doesn’t think any woman should have to change her appearance to succeed, he does understand that women will often feel more confident in every avenue of their lives following a plastic surgery procedure.

If a client is doing something sweat-inducing — like, say, hitting the Emmys carpet in 80 degree heat — that first layer will visibly sweat right off without a proper pre-ceremony wash. Timing also depends on original skin color, and how dark a client hopes to be. For example, if youre Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba, sleeping in your spray tan will only enhance your already dark glow. But for American Horror Storys Rabe, who, Locke says, loves her pale skin, a pre-bedtime shower is a must unless you want to wake up looking like a cantaloupe. ORANGE REALLY IS THE NEW BLACK: Netflix actress Laura Prepon hit HBO’s after party looking quite bronzed. According to makeup artist Kirin Bhatty , who gave Jessica Pare her flawless face at Audis pre-Emmys party on Sunday, a would-be tanner should also be realistic with expectations. Never go more than two shades darker than your natural skin tone, she says, adding that anything more is a surefire way to look orange, streaky and just plain unnatural.

Instead we would apply a subtle taupe like Laura Mercier Eye Colour in Topaz to her eyelids, which would make Jessica’s green eyes pop. Rather than contouring the starlet’s cheekbones (Jessica’s sky-high cheekbones don’t need the extra lift) we would warm up her skin by applying a warm pink blush like Kat Von D Everlasting Blush in Por Vida to the apples of her cheeks. As much as it pains us to replace a fiery red lip, in this case we feel it’s a must. The red is just too harsh against her pale skin and dark hair. We would still opt for bold and bright but switch to a longwearing fuchsia lipstick like Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids in Fuchsia Flash , which would warm up her face but still add the right dose of drama. We feel like every time we see Jessica Pare on the red carpet she just can’t seem to get the decade right.

Beauty and the Berkshires

Williamstown (williamstownchamber.com): Nestled at the bottom of Mount Greylock in the northern Berkshires, Williamstown is a quintessentially picturesque small New England college town with an active arts scene and a world-class art museum, the Clark (413-458-2303; http://www.clarkart.edu ). By Marshall S. Berdan Special to the Miami http://www.chicemma.com Herald When it comes to fall foliage, its hard to go wrong anywhere in New England. But neither is there any need to go farther than the compact and easily accessible Berkshires of western Massachusetts, as authentic a slice of classic New England as anywhere further north. Stretching from Connecticut to Vermont, the Berkshires occupy the most western part of the Bay State. Nestled among their thickly forested ridges are picturesque colonial-era villages, complete with Congregational churches, sugar maple-accented greenery and hundred-year-old general stores; 19th-century industrial villages, now mostly reclaimed for more benign uses; bucolic farmlands and orchards; art and craft galleries; and plenty of gorgeous fall scenery. But the Berkshires have something else going for them: dozens of art and history museums, literary sites, and grand historic homes something for itinerant leaf-peepers to do should the weather temporally obscure Mother Natures annual command performance.

I hate to pack. I’m not good at it and no matter how hard I try it never seems to improve. I regularly travel by Megabus, [read] the uber-affordable bus line that says it can transport someone from Pittsburgh to New York City for prices as low as $1. I’ve hobbled up to the bus stop at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center bogged down with a rolling suitcase (always the maximum size allowed) stuffed with everything I need (and likely many things I don’t). Also with me is a carry-on bag, aka the everything-I-couldn’t-cram-into-the-suitcase tote.
